There is absolutely no rule that says you need a birthday, graduation, missing front teeth, or some other official milestone to justify taking pictures of your kid.
Sometimes your eight-year-old is just really freaking cool.
Meet Sofia.
She came into the studio for a personality portrait session, Mom did her makeup, she put on the cutest little pink dress, and then Sofia proceeded to act like being in front of a camera was simply part of her regular Tuesday schedule.
No nerves. No awkwardness.
Just “Yep, I belong here.”
And I loved every second of it.
Kids Deserve Photos That Are About THEM
We take approximately 47,000 pictures of our kids on our phones.
They're eating breakfast. They're asleep in a weird position. They're holding something they made at school. They're standing next to the dog. They're making a face that we swear we're going to show at their wedding someday.
But there's something really fun about giving a kid an entire photography session that's just about them.
Not because they accomplished something.
Not because it's family photo day.
Just because this is who they are right now.
At eight, Sofia is fun, confident and VERY comfortable in front of a camera. So that's what we photographed.
I Don't Need Kids to Perform for Me
If you've been around here for more than five minutes, you already know:
I don't do say cheese.
Even in the studio.
I don't need a kid to cycle through twelve poses and give me the same perfect smile in every photograph. I want the little expressions in between. The giant hair flip. The quiet look. The giggle she couldn't hold in.
Sofia happened to LOVE the camera, so I let her run with it.
Another kid might need ten minutes to decide whether I'm suspicious.
Both work.
The whole point is making room for the kid who's actually standing in front of me.
Color or Black & White? I'm Not Choosing.
One of my favorite parts of studio portrait sessions is getting to play with both.
The color portraits from Sofia's session are bright, clean and show off that pale pink dress beautifully.
Then we switched some of the images to black and white and suddenly they had a completely different personality.
A little classic. A little editorial.
And somehow that flying-hair photo just belongs in black and white.
So no, I'm not picking a team.
You can have both.
Personality Portraits for Kids in the Charlotte Area
Kids change ridiculously fast, and not every photography session needs to involve coordinating five people's outfits and convincing Dad he'll survive for an hour.
Sometimes it can just be about one kid being exactly who they are right now.
If you're looking for children's studio photography in the Charlotte or Lake Norman area, personality portraits are a chance to give your kid the camera for once.
They don't need to know how to pose.
They don't need to sit still.
They definitely don't need to say cheese.
They just need to show up.
